There are two main types of pet training in Victoria: the Positive Reinforcement method, and the Alpha Dog method.
The idea behind the Positive Reinforcement method of pet training is that our pets learn good manners when they are rewarded for doing something good. Trainers who use this method will often employ hand signals, clickers, favourite toys, games or verbal cues to help correct a pet’s behaviour. In this case, punishment for not behaving doesn’t involve any kind physical correction, but rather it usually involves simply taking away the reward. In the end, the pet owner gets a pet that is trained, with its spirit intact.
The Alpha Dog method involves establishing dominance over your pet. This might include the use of prong collars, e-collars, choke chains, and even a hand squeeze that is meant to act as a sort of quick “bite”. An effective Alpha Dog approach isn’t just about using physical correction, however— it also involves rewarding good behaviour, like the Positive Reinforcement method. The idea behind this approach is that pets will likely respond faster to more physical correction.
No matter which method you choose, it’s important to remember that each pet is different. Therefore, the method that works best for one animal may not work for another. Or, you may need to take a sort of hybrid approach— that is, a combination of the two. As important as it is, one of the most argued parts of pet training in Victoria is which method is best.
