With the first real estate board in Canada set up in 1888 in Vancouver, the organized real estate services here are virtually as old as the country itself. In the first couple of decades since 1888, real estate boards were set up in several cities across Canada. Since then, the field of real estate services has grown steadily, even in spite of the wartime measures put in place during World War II, which included a number of policies surrounding rentals and property ownership.
Eventually, the real estate services industry decided to form a national organization whose purpose was to influence the federal government, with regard to the country’s post-war planning.
In 1943, several real estate boards from across Canada came together to create the constitution for the Canadian Association of Real Estate Boards (CAREB). April, 1944, saw CAREB’s first conference, in which the term “realtor” was adopted for its member real estate services professionals. After 1955, CAREB promoted what it called the “Photo Co-op System”, the forerunner of modern Board MLS Systems.
