Arts & crafts, sometimes also called handcrafting, refers to any one of a huge number of types of work involved with creating by hand simple decorative or practical objects using nothing but simple tools.
The practice is mainly passed down from ancient civilizations, who had to hand make any of the tools or other daily necessities that they required. This practice supplied those civilizations with all of their farming tools, weapons, clothes, and dishes, as well as anything else they needed. In today's world, many people still make a living from handcrafting by creating simple sculptures and decorative items, among other things, and selling them at local markets. Aside from being a type of business or hobby, arts & crafts can also be used for educational purposes.
Most crafting projects require the development of some particular skill, and often more than a little patience, and sometimes can be the spark that jump starts a pupils creative interests. The arts & crafts movement was started in the late 19th century, primarily in Europe, Australia, and North America. The founders of the movement, William Morris and John Ruskin, thought that pre-industrial civilizations found fulfillment through the practice of crafting because it promoted a sense of community, personal empowerment, and self-sufficiency. These principles were held up as counteracting some of the more alienating effects of labor in early industrial era.
