Apparel, or clothing as we commonly call it, refers to any fiber material that has been fashioned to be worn on the body. From a purely physical perspective, clothing serves many purposes; it protects us from the elements and can serve as a safety measure against potentially hazardous activities, such as those found in many professions as well as outdoor activities such as hiking. By serving as a barrier between the environment and our skin, it protects us from insect bites, rough surfaces, and thorny plants as just a few of many, many examples.
Clothing provides insulation against extreme temperatures and keeps toxic and infectious materials away from the body. It is difficult to determing when exactly in history humans started wearing clothes. Some experts suggest that humans descended from several species of clothing-wearing primates that existed as long as 650'000 years ago. Other experts see the evolution of lice as evidence of the time when humans started wearing clothes. The body louse, which lives specifically in clothing, divereged from head lice a little over 100'000 years ago, suggesting that it was around this time that humans started clothing themselves, providing a convenient shelter for this particular species.
In modern times, clothing and apparel is used for far more than utilitarian purposes. The kind of clothing we wear has become a reflection of personal style, though it is still at least somewhat environmentally dependent. If you're living in Victoria BC, apparel and clothing of various kinds can be found in many shops around the city. For more information, please view our member offers below.
