A counsellor is someone whose job it is to provide guidance, advice, or assistance to whomever comes to them in need of it, usually with regards to some kind of personal problem or difficulty.
There’s a common conception that counselling is something that need be avoided because to seek it is to admit some chronic personal weakness, while in truth there’s not a person alive who couldn’t find some genuine benefit in talking to a counsellor. It’s not always easy to see what within ourselves or our environment holds us back from being happy, successful, or otherwise fulfilled. Many people distract themselves endlessly and avoid facing such issues wherever possible, which in itself is an extremely limiting habit.
There is a huge variety of different types of counsellors, each specializing in providing a different kind of assistance. A counsellor might be equipped to give guidance on relationships, others on mental health or emotional issues, or perhaps employment or academic goals. It is not the job of a counsellor to highlight weaknesses and tell you how to fix them, but to show you what’s in front of you, the extent of personal control and what limits are put on that control by either internal or external factors, and to help find positive resolution to conflict.
