A babysitter is someone who fills the role of a temporary caretaker for a child. Babysitting is a common activity among young teenagers who are as of yet ineligible for general employment, as well as young adults in high school or college who are looking for a flexible way to make a bit of extra income. Some adults also work as babysitters, although a professional will likely refer to themselves as a home childcare service, or something similar.
There are many established training programs for babysitters, mainly focused on safety and child-appropriate first aid. While completion of such a course isn’t necessary for someone to look after a child, it generally helps all involved parties feel more comfortable and relaxed that that child is in good hands.
Babysitting can be exhausting, depending on the age and temperament of the child in question. While basic babysitting activities usually extend to preparing meals, playing games, diaper changes, or even just being present while the child is sleeping, an especially energetic youngster can keep you running from start to finish. It’s pretty well known that parenting isn’t easy. It’s a round the clock job that too often extends into those dwindling but oh-so-precious sleeping hours.
Sometimes parents just need some time to themselves, to unwind, to have the illusion of being without responsibility for a few hours. Hiring a babysitter to help find a sliver of free time is healthy for a parent, it’s exactly why that particular kind of caretaking role exists.
