Shawnigan Lake Museum

Shawnigan Lake Museum on Vancouver Island is filled with the history and artifacts of the area. It is a great place for visitors of all ages to learn about Shawnigan Lake in a fun and informative environment. From art, artifacts, and interactive displays, the Museum has something that will be of interest to everyone who visits. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable and ready to answer any questions you may have regarding their displays and are happy to impart little known facts about the area. Admission to the Museum is by donation, making it a perfect place for the whole family to spend the day.

Shawnigan Lake itself is a mostly rural community about 45 minutes from Victoria. The town’s lake is approximately 8 km long and nestled in a picturesque valley that is surrounded by forested hills. With a number of day-use parks along the lake a leisurely picnic either before or after visiting the Museum nicely rounds out a perfect day spent in Shawnigan Lake.

Shawnigan Lake offers a host of unique and local events from a river swim in January, an Easter egg hunt in March, and Canada Day festivities in July, to old time relay races in August, and a fundraiser for the local food bank in December.

Each summer, Shawnigan Lake Museum hosts their ‘Summer Series’ presentations, held on Wednesday afternoons. The admission for these presentations is by donation and light refreshments are served after each one. Some of the presentations include:

  • The Geology Around Us
  • Minna Gildea and her Strathcona Lodge School for girls
  • The Eye In The Sky Doesn’t Lie

Participation at each of these events is limited so be sure to RSVP before attending by calling 250.743.8675 or email at: [email protected].
