Elk Lake Regional Park is located in Saanich along the Patricia Bay Highway, commonly referred to as the ‘Pat Bay Highway’. The grounds are open from sunrise to sunset and offer a wide variety of activities for all ages. There are a number of trails throughout with some designated for hikers only and others as multi-use and are appropriate for cyclists, hikers, and horse riders. All trails are ranked as ‘easy’, making them the perfect outing for the whole family.
The park itself is highly accessible being only about a 20 minute drive from the capital city of Victoria on southern Vancouver Island. If you’re heading out from Victoria, the directions are quite straightforward:
- Follow Pat Bay Highway
- Turn Left on Sayward Road
- Left on Hamsterly Road
- Right on Brookleigh Road
- The park entrance will be on your left hand side
Public transportation is also available To Elk Lake via the #70 or #72 BC Transit buses. Simply hop on either bus in Victoria then the park is a short walk from the bus stop.
It’s easy to spend the day at Elk Lake with so many activities and amenities that are available. Just north of the lake you will find Eagle Beach where you can enjoy a picnic under majestic Pacific Willows, go for a swim, and perhaps a leisurely hike. The area is also frequented by water-skiers, rowers, wind surfers, sailors, and fishers. It’s also possible to reserve a picnic shelter making it a great idea if you plan on spending the whole day. The Nature Centre near the main Beaver Lake parking lot provides information on trails where staff is happy to answer any questions you have about the park and point out the many interpretive displays about the park’s history. They are open from 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays, and holiday Mondays from June to September.
