Oak Bay BC Real Estate & Attractions

About Oak Bay, British Columbia

The Garry Oak Meadows and nearby Salish Sea has been has been inhabited by a number of Aboriginal groups for centuries, some of whom lived there permanently and others that used the area as temporary camps. They worked hard harvesting all that the meadows and the sea provided while understanding the importance of sustainability for their environment. One can still see archeological sites and numerous artifacts that point to the historical richness of Oak Bay.
The late 1700’s saw the first European explorers to the area and subsequently the establishment of Fort Victoria in 1843. During this time the Hudson’s Bay Company controlled much of the land now known as Oak Bay. The second half of the 19th century saw a number of family farms being established, one of which (Tod House) still stands today.
Today’s Oak Bay was incorporated in 1906. The area soon established more reliable transportation methods along with sewer and water pipes allowing for some of the first homes to be built in areas such as:
• Oak Bay Avenue
• Cadboro Bay Road
• The Central Waterfront District
The early 1960’s gave way to one of the last major development surges including the establishment of Oak Bay Marina. Today one can see examples of the fine architecture used to build neighbourhoods such as:
• Tudor Revival
• Arts and Crafts
• Art Deco, and more
